A Little History
The Native Washoe Indians were the first people living in the Lake Tahoe area. In 1844, American explorers Kit Carson and John Fremont were the first to discover the area. Then, in the 1860s, silver was discovered in the Sierra Nevada and the area prospered as prospectors flocked here to seek their fortunes. Original settlements focused on the mining and the lumber industries, but in the 1920's the first casino's arrived. Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin built the "Greatest Casino in America". But, Lucky's casino was built on the California Side at the Tallac Resort in South Lake Tahoe. Gambling did not come to Nevada until 1926 and then it was focused on the other end of the lake. It was not until 1955 that Harrahs was established at Stateline in South Lake Tahoe.
Ski Run Marina was first established in 1939. It was a focal part of South Lake Tahoe in the early days when the city was more evenly spread east and west. The current building was completed in the 1996-1997 season. The Tahoe Queen, arguably the most famous paddlewheeler on the lake has always called Ski Run Marina home.
Ski Run Marina is once again returning to a prominent position in the South Lake Tahoe tourist and business community. Visitors tired of the Stateline Casino type entertainment are flocking to retail communities like Ski Run Marina for more family entertainment and the total Tahoe experience. The local south lake Tahoe Marina Art Festival, Man's Best Friend and Marina Winter Fest are all based at Ski Run Marina. These festivals are bringing locals and visitors to Ski Run Marina in droves, just like in its old glory days .
