Treat yourself to an unforgettable fishing and site seeing experience on America's premier Alpine lake. Lake Tahoe is world famous for Trout and Salmon fishing. Anglers can catch Browns, Rainbows and large Mackinaw Trout year round or fight with some Kokanee Salmon in season. Ski Run Marina is proud to partner with Tahoe Sport Fishing to offer the fishing trip of a lifetime for experienced anglers and novices alike.

Tahoe Sport Fishing has been in business since 1953. Tahoe Sport fishing has 7 boats ranging in size from 30 to 45 feet. Their captains are all very experienced locals who know where the fish will be feeding. They are all familiar with trolling, drifting and jigging. All the boats have private heads (toilets), heated cabins and the latest fish finding technology. They can accommodate any size group you can create. Many Ski Run marina wedding groups have taken advantage of this service and booked fishing charters for their wedding guests.

The daily combined limit is 5 fish per person (2 Mackinaws, 3 Trout). Average size is 2-7 pounds and many 20-30 pound trophies have been caught on Tahoe Sport Fishing boats. When the fish aren't biting, the captains will entertain you with many stories while you drift in some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Back at the dock, they clean and sack your day's catch. Our own Riva Grill at Ski Run Marina will happily cook up your catch for lunch or dinner.

For those of you who want to brave it alone here is some useful information and tips.

The Lake Tahoe Records are impressive. The largest Cutthroat Trout cought in Lake Tahoe was over 31 pounds. The largest Mackinaw Lake Trout was over 36 pounds and a crazy 37 inches. The largest Kokanee Salmon caught in Lake Tahoe was 26 inches long.

The best fishing at Lake Tahoe is in deep water from a boat, and the right locations are not easy to find.  I recommend for the first time out hire one of Tahoe´s experienced fishing guides and follow their advice.  The best shore fishing is at  Rubicon Point in the D.L. Bliss State Park.  Lake Tahoe is open for fishing year round from 1 hour before sunrise to 2 hours after sunset. Fishing is closed in the lake within 300 feet of its tributaries and upstream to the first lake from October 1 through June 30. The rest of the year the entire lake is open.

The catch limits are 5 game fish of which not more than two can be Mackinaw Lake Trout.  No fish may be used for bait or possessed for use as bait in Lake Tahoe unless taken from the lake.

California residents under 16 years of age or Nevada residents under 12 are not required to have a fishing license on Lake Tahoe. All other anglers must have one of the following:

California fishing license (2009)
Cost:  Annual - $41.20/resident, $110.80/nonresident
One-Day Permit - $13.40/resident or nonresident
Two-Day Permit - $20.75/resident or nonresident
Ten-Day Permit - $41.20/nonresident
Free fishing days in 2009 - To Be Announced (no license required)

It is best to fish when there is a slight surface riffle. This  will break up shadows cast on the bottom and will partially obliterate the angler from view. Always use a light monofilament line and  cast a long way from shore and use very long trolling lines. Rainbow Trout prefer small lures and  best fished in the fall and early spring. Brown Trout prefer night crawlers or lures and are best fished for in summer and just before dusk.  The west shore of Lake Tahoe is great for Brown Trout. For Mackinaw Lake Trout it is best to deepline troll at least 80 feet with large flashers.   Mackinaw are caught year around. The  Kokanee Salmon are often caught with trolling with a Wes Lane Rig or clusters of worms on size 4, 6, or 8 hooks.  Early spring and late summer provides the best fishing.
